Off We Go!: July 2, 2013

"The time has come, the walrus said..."

Today we begin our 3 1/2 week adventure in Africa! A 2-hour flight to JFK followed by an 11-hour flight to Kotoka Airport in Accra, Ghana.  What better way to begin the month of July?

Travelers Not Tourists

Daniel Boorstin, former Librarian of Congress, devoted an entire chapter in his book, The Image, to the differences between travelers and tourists, lamenting the demise of the former and the emergence of the latter especially with respect to Americans.

The traveler is active; he goes strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes “sight-seeing.”

During our weeks in Ghana we will actively engage the culture and people with whom we work and live.  Daily we will teach in K-8 classrooms, learning from our Ghanaian colleagues as we share American instructional approaches, walking through rural villages with a child on each hand, getting to know the market ladies in Kotokuraba Market, and experiencing Ghanaian food, fun and family.

Pray with us that our time in this incredible country will be productive, positive, and a blessing to everyone we encounter.
